Learning Outside the Classroom

"They're not just playing in nature, they are: Learning, creating, sensing, believing, relaxing, exploring, observing, wondering, connecting, discovering, appreciating, understanding, experimenting..."- Penny Whitehouse

Vision

Our vision for offsite learning is to provide every pupil with meaningful, inclusive experiences beyond the classroom that nurture physical, social, and emotional development. Through activities such as community experiences, swimming, bowling, forest school, climbing, and fishing, we aim to build confidence, independence, and resilience in real-world settings. These opportunities promote curiosity, wellbeing, and life skills, ensuring that all learners can thrive, connect with their community, and enjoy enriching experiences.

Intent:

Our curriculum is designed to provide inclusive, meaningful, and progressive experiences that prepare pupils for life beyond school. It aims to develop independence, confidence, and essential life skills through a structured framework of opportunities across all key stages and pathways.

The curriculum intent is to:

  • Promote holistic development through sensory experiences, enrichment activities, and outdoor learning that nurture curiosity and engagement.
  • Foster independence and life skills, including cooking, household tasks, and community participation, enabling pupils to thrive in real-world contexts.
  • Provide vocational and career pathways, including work experience and transition planning, to support aspirations for life after school.
  • Encourage physical well-being and confidence through swimming and active outdoor opportunities.
  • Embed community integration, ensuring pupils develop social communication, road safety awareness, and practical skills for independent travel and participation in society.

Our approach ensures that every pupil has access to broad, balanced, and relevant experiences, tailored to their individual needs, while maintaining high expectations for progress and achievement. By combining academic learning with practical, real-life experiences, we aim to empower pupils to become confident, capable, and resilient individuals.

Implementation:

We deliver our curriculum through structured, personalised experiences that build independence and life skills. Learning is tailored to our different pathways and ensures progression from Early Years to Post-16.

Pupil progress is monitored through personalised targets and use of Evidence for Learning, ensuring every pupil receives a broad, balanced, and meaningful education.
