Life Skills Framework
All pupils receive a specific Independence target, regardless of their pathway. This target will be highly individualised and focus on what is important to that child at that time.
We encourage the development of self-care and life skills for those who have not managed this independently yet. The Life Skills framework is designed to help support small steps in progress within a range of functional life skills;
- Cleanliness and Health (including toileting, general health, tooth care and hair care)
- Clothing (including dressing/undressing and selection/care of clothes)
- Eating and Drinking
- Domestic Tasks (including washing dishes, preparing food, setting a table and clearing a table)
- Emotions (including Emotional Regulation and understanding emotions)
- Social Skills (including social interaction and social etiquette)
- Communication (including receptive and expressive language)
- Independent Travel (including road awareness and public transport)
For learners with SEN, life skills aren’t an ‘extra’—they are the foundation for independence, confidence, and a meaningful future. Teaching life skills empowers young people to navigate the world with dignity and purpose.
