‘I have no special talents. I am only passionately curious’
- Albert Einstein
The best way to experience of Science is through curiosity. Across all Pathways at Nexus we encourage pupils to be as curious as possible to develop and experience Science in the world around them.
Science is everywhere, even when we don’t notice it. At our school, we encourage pupils to bring their natural curiosity into every lesson and learning experience. This approach helps them build essential scientific skills in fun and engaging ways. From exploring states of matter through ice, slime, and oobleck in messy play, to discovering chemical reactions during food technology and cooking sessions, science becomes hands-on and exciting. Our staff model curiosity through communication and conversation, inspiring pupils to ask questions and deepen their understanding every day.
All Pathways have learning opportunities for Science within the school week. Lessons are hands on meaningful to support pupils develop their investigation and exploration skills and to build on their Scientific skills and knowledge.
In Pathway 1 and 2 pupils will explore Science in a range of lessons from bucket time to water play. Pupils are offered enticing activities to increase their curiosity. Sensory play and Messy play supports pupils to develop and explore their sensory preferences and create their own ‘experiments’ through a play approach.
In Pathway 3 and 4 pupils will have 1 Science lesson a week to explore and develop their understanding on the current topic linked to the curriculum framework. Lessons are as practical as possible to support pupils learning styles. In KS4 pupils will work towards AQA Entry Level Science qualifications to demonstrate the skills and knowledge they have developed throughout their school career.
We have opportunities throughout each academic year to integrate and collaborate with other KsENT schools to take part in competitions and investigation experiments. Pupils have the opportunity to visit other schools to explore accessible Science Labs and to get hands on experience with a range of Scientific equipment.
To extend learning and offer whole school experiences we were very lucky to have had a visit from a mobile planetarium and are looking forward to a visit from the Creepy Claws insects and animals to explore food chains, learn about habitats and have a first hand experience interacting with animals we have been learning about but may not have seen up close!
Our science curriculum empowers every pupil to see the wonder in the world around them and to believe that curiosity can lead to endless possibilities.
