PE and Outdoor Learning

“Don’t limit me” - Timothy Harris

“Nature is a tool to get children to experience not just the wider world, but themselves.” – Stephen Moss.

Vision

Our vision is to create an inclusive, empowering physical development environment where every child at Nexus is supported to reach their full potential. Through personalised, engaging, and meaningful movement experiences, we nurture confidence, independence, physical wellbeing, and a lifelong enjoyment of being active. We celebrate every achievement and ensure that all learners feel safe, valued, and fully included as they grow in strength, capability, and self-belief.

Intent:

Our curriculum for Physical Development and Outdoor Learning is designed to meet the needs of pupils all of the pupils at Nexus through a highly structured, sequenced and holistic developmental framework. It’s purpose is to ensure every learner develops functional physical skills, improved health and wellbeing, self-regulation, and increasing independence within a safe, motivating and inclusive environment.

The curriculum is built on a clear progression model that spans early developmental milestones through to advanced physical competencies. Pupils can move through carefully defined bands covering head and core control, arm and hand function, leg and foot movement, balance, co-ordination, strength, spatial awareness, and understanding. This ensures physical development is personalised, ambitious, and responsive to each pupil’s starting point. Outdoor learning is integral throughout, enabling pupils to apply physical skills in real-world environments and engage with sensory-rich, motivating activities that promote curiosity, problem-solving and resilience.

We are committed to ensuring that every pupil receives a curriculum that promotes confidence, independence and enjoyment in movement. Through high-quality teaching, therapeutic collaboration and rich outdoor learning experiences, we aim for all pupils to develop the physical competence, self-belief and wellbeing needed to engage purposefully in daily life and to thrive as active, healthy and empowered individuals.

Implementation:

We deliver our Physical Development and Outdoor Learning curriculum through high-quality teaching, therapeutic collaboration, and personalised pathways for every pupil. Staff receive targeted training and resources to embed structured progression and outdoor learning into daily practice. Regular assessment ensures plans are adapted to meet individual needs, while safe, engaging environments promote exploration, resilience, and wellbeing.
