Welcome from the Headteacher
Welcome to Nexus School. We are a designated special school for pupils with profound, severe and complex needs (PSCN), proudly serving families in Tonbridge and the wider Kent area.
Since opening in September 2017, Nexus School has grown into a vibrant, aspirational community. We are immensely proud of what our pupils, families and staff have achieved together, and we are delighted to share both our journey and our vision with you.
Our purpose-built main site in Tonbridge, alongside our specialist classrooms and resource spaces at Wouldham, provides an extensive range of facilities, environments and interventions designed to meet the complex and diverse needs of our pupils. These high-quality resources, combined with a highly skilled, trained and dedicated staff team, enable us to deliver a curriculum that is both ambitious and meaningful.
At Nexus, learning is about far more than academic outcomes alone. Alongside formal subject learning, we place great value on the small but significant steps our pupils make each day. We are passionate about recognising, celebrating and capturing progress beyond the formal curriculum — whether that progress is in communication, independence, emotional regulation, physical development or personal confidence.
Our innovative Informal Curriculum has gained national recognition as an area of excellence. This work reflects our belief that learning happens everywhere and in many different forms, and we are proud to have shared and developed this approach locally and nationally with other schools and professionals.
All pupils attending Nexus School have an Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP), and we work in close partnership with families, therapists and external professionals to ensure each child receives personalised, holistic support.
We are always striving to do things a little differently to inspire and motivate our pupils. Enrichment and real-world experiences are an integral part of life at Nexus, and our pupils regularly access opportunities such as ice skating, fishing, paddle boarding and sailing — including tailored experiences for pupils with profound and multiple learning difficulties (PMLD).
Looking to the future, we continue to invest in the growth and development of our school. A new block of five classrooms is planned for completion in 2027, further enhancing our capacity and enabling us to extend our specialist provision for future cohorts of pupils.
Our work and impact have been recognised through external validation, including highly positive feedback from Ofsted and Challenge Partners, who noted:
‘Staff are expert in understanding pupils ’needs and adapting the way that they deliver the curriculum to take each individual’s needs into account.’
(Ofsted 2023)
‘Nexus is a ‘wraparound’ model of care and support that ensures pupils and their families are helped to get through the challenges that life throws at them’
(Challenge Partners Review 2025 – Review Judgement; Leading)
We are also proud to have recently been awarded the Leading Parent Partnership Award and the Wellbeing Award, reflecting our strong commitment to working alongside families and prioritising the wellbeing of pupils and staff alike.
We are incredibly proud of what Nexus School has achieved and of the inclusive, aspirational environment we offer our pupils and their families. We warmly invite you to explore our website and learn more about our community, our values and our commitment to ensuring every child is supported to thrive.
