BackAchievement and Progress
Achievement and Progress Report September 2022 – August 2023
At Nexus School we believe that the key objectives of assessment are:
• To provide effective feedback to students.
• To actively involve students in their own learning.
• To address the need for students to be able to assess themselves and understand how they can improve.
• To adjust teaching to take into account the results of assessment.
• To recognise the profound influence that assessment has on the motivation and self-esteem of students.
• To allow teachers to evaluate and respond to their teaching and students’ learning.
• To track student progress and coordinate intervention where appropriate.
• To record, recognise and celebrate student achievement
At Nexus School we use B Squared to measure progress in English and Maths. The frameworks are adaptations of the National Curriculum with levels ranging from Pre Key Stage Standard 1 to Step 10. To allow students to show progress each level includes a wide variety of short-term targets and teachers indicate and identify the targets that students have achieved. This creates a percentage of the level achieved and over time a percentage increase indicating the rate of progress.
Students individual progress is monitored regularly throughout the year in academic subjects as well as monitoring and assessing pupils progress towards EHCP outcomes. A range of tools are used in the school to make an accurate and triangulated understanding of the pupils progress in Nexus school ranging from pupil progress meetings to academic data drops using B Squared and assessments and progress towards EHCP outcomes using Evidence for Learning. Comparison of progress of pupils in similar cohorts allow us to identify those which are making accelerated progress or who need an intervention.
Pupils attending Nexus have EHC Plans and work below the levels required for Statutory Key Stage Assessments. Here is a link to our page of the Schools and Colleges Performance Table Information: https://www.find-school-performance-data.service.gov.uk/school/119050/nexus-foundation-special-school
