School Health (Kent) consists of a team of school nurses and practitioners who work with children, young people and families in Kent.
You do not have to be in school to use this service.

Education support

As a school or an organisation that works with children, young people or families, NHS School Health can support in a number of ways.
Below is a list of the categories covered. 
Relationships and sex education
Support to deliver compulsory relationships and sex education.
Health information
Online training and resources for asthma, anaphylaxis and epilepsy.
Healthy lifestyles
Support for schools to encourage and support healthy lifestyles particularly around physical activity, smoking and weight.
Emotional health, wellbeing and resilience
Support around year six transition and emotional health and wellbeing. You can also access emotional health and wellbeing resources to support resilience here.
Personal, social, health and economic education
Guidance, support and resources to help you deliver personal, social, health and economic education.
Drug and alcohol education
Support to deliver effective alcohol and drug education which builds pupil resilience and life skills

Emotional Health and Wellbeing

School healthEmotional Health and Wellbeing.

For some children and young people, it can be difficult to manage and understand their feelings.  Young people might experience a wide variety of difficulties including low mood, difficulty sleeping, loss of appetite, difficulty concentrating or might be avoiding school.

The School Health Team may support parents/carers and children directly or refer to another provider, if appropriate.

The team works closely with the Kent Children and Young People’s Mental Health Service.
Chat healthChatHealth is a confidential and anonymous text service for 11-19 year-olds. Young people can text with a member of the NHS School Health Team about any physical or emotional health concerns they have. This service is available Monday to Friday, 9 am - 5 pm on 07520 618850.
Counselling: 
Counselling london camden psychotherapy 1633793Kent School Health can offer up to six counselling sessions for young people aged 11-19. These sessions can help a young person gain understanding and develop strategies. 
For primary school-aged children, they offer the child six sessions with a counsellor, or if more appropriate, they offer parents six weekly sessions with advice on practical, easy to use strategies to support your child.

School Health Kent also offer bereavement counselling for those aged 4 to 19 who have been bereaved as a result of the Coronavirus.
These sessions can be offered via video link, phone or in person.

Supporting a child at home:
ResilienceThe Kent Resilience Hub is aimed at parents of children aged between 10 and 16. It has a range of helpful articles, tools and resources for parents and carers, so that you can increase understanding and find tools and approaches to help build your child’s resilience.

Good health mattersGood Mental Health Matters is another site that provides great resources to help parents support their whole families emotional health.

KoothKooth is a fantastic free online mental health and wellbeing service for young people aged 10 to 25. It’s a place to get advice, information and support 24/7. 
Mood sparkAccess Moodspark.org.uk to learn about mental health and find tips and resources to keep emotionally healthy.
Good health mattersGood Health Matters is a great website that can help support a child or young person to make small changes to support their mental health.

They take referrals directly from:
children and young people parents or carers schools, colleges and higher education colleges other health care professionals or partner organisations voluntary agencies.

Primary School Aged 4 - 11

Playing with clay 9 1165886 (1)The School Health Primary Aged Team will visit the child’s school and see how the child is doing in reception and year six.
If parents have any concerns, they don’t need to wait, they can contact the health team at any time, even if the child is not attending school.

Friends 1515027Reception year is an important time for your child as they settle into school life. We know how important it is to make sure children get the best start they can. Children are usually offered three health checks in reception.

Height & Weight Measurements

MeasureThe National Childhood Measurement Programme measures the height and weight of children in reception and year six.  Results are not shared with children or the teachers but are sent directly to parents. 
Health and Development Checks

Children circle 1528995School Health offer health and development surveys for children in reception and in year 6.
These help to identify any health needs;  for example a long-term medical condition such as diabetes or asthma, or emotional or mental health issues. This means that action plans and support can be put in place early and ensure children have the best possible support.
Surveys are sent to parents of reception-aged children to complete. Year six children complete the survey by themselves in class

Secondary School Aged 11 - 19

Secondary School Health Team Support
School healthThe School Health Team supports young people and their parents/carers throughout secondary school.
This can be a time when new health conditions develop, or young people struggle to adjust to changes in their body, or face new emotional challenges as a result of exam pressures or changing relationships.

Heart 1239269School Health send all young people in year 10 (aged 14 to 15) and year 12 (aged 16 to 17) a health and development survey to help identify any emerging health conditions or concerns (for example, if they have developed a long term condition, become a young carer, or have questions about drugs, alcohol, smoking or sex and relationships).
This is to identify any issues as soon as possible and to ensure that young people have the support in place to help them reach their potential.
The survey is sent directly to the young person via email.
